I would like to write poetry that comes at you like a heart attack and stays with you like an embrace.
I would like to write stories that you can live in and prepare you for the days to come.

I find myself unable to heed the warnings on cigarette packs regarding cancer or lung disease. Dating back to my great-grandparents (and even older), our family has never had a history of cancer. None of us have ever died because of our vices, be it cigarettes or alcohol. Instead we lived long lives closeted by fear or guilt or could-have-beens; letting ourselves be haunted and held back by ghosts or unfulfilled desires and frustrated dreams. Most of us withered or rather, 'settled' within the prisons created by a lifetime's inability to say no or to stand up to having our lives dictated for us. Everytime I make this decision - this choice to stay and be who my grandparents want me to be (at least in appearances for their sake), a part of me withers and dies. An image immediately appears in my mind's eye of a hammerstrike upon the head of a spike, driving a heavy iron chain further into the ground. It's like the sound of a judge's gavel punctuating the end of a prison sentence. Like the bars of a cell clanging shut and I'm left in a tiny Spartan cell with only one small window to let the sunlight in. But there's a strange accompanying sense of peace to it.
